Binding and Loosing:

from the Authority to the Power to do it.

THE MAIN TEXT THAT WE SHALL USE, I SHALL POST NOW. WE SHALL COME BACK TO IT A BIT LATER, BUT I THINK I NEED TO DEAL WITH SOME THINGS FIRST.

Matthew 16:15-19 “15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. “

The Roman Catholic Church has taken this to mean a lot of different things other than what the context says. First of all, Peter is not the Rock the church is built on. Jesus is the petra that it is built on which is shown by all the other scriptures about the stone that the builders rejected and the chief cornerstone the living stones of the church are built from. It is the Lord Jesus Christ... not Peter. Simon here was called petros, a little stone. The word Rock is Petra, a massive boulder. So, we need to understand that.

Also, the connotation of spiritual binding and loosing connects in context to the verse before... the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it... binding and loosing is a spiritual authority given by the keys (which represents authority) given to the church (not just Peter or the pope as the RC teaches).

St. Peter is not standing at the gates in heaven no matter how many cartoons or jokes we get saturated in that shows him thus. These keys are spiritual authority given to the church so that the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. In fact, the church is given great authority by Jesus here.

WE SHALL RETURN A BIT LATER AND LOOK SPECIFICALLY AT THIS.

INTRODUCTION: A few words and a certain amount of the author’s opinion about this section of our study on binding and loosing so that we can set a tone for this part of our teaching.

In understanding Binding and Loosing, there are some distinctions that must be made between authority and power. And we need to understand what we have scriptural authority to do and what we don’t have scriptural authority to do.

For example, there has been times that people have asked me when I have cast out demons through power in Jesus name, “Why didn’t you bind the demon to walk the dry places when you cast him out?” We really do not have any scriptural authority to do that is the reason. Unless the Holy Spirit gives me that particular utterance, I won’t say it because I have nothing to back it up. Now, demons were afraid that Jesus the Son of God... in the authority of the Son of God would cast them in the abyss, but there is no authority for us as the church to do that.

Let’s understand some things, that God will back up His Word.... the Word of God is true, and demons are not afraid of our traditions and teachings if they aren’t backed up by the Word of God rightly divided ( I say that because you can take a single scripture out of context and try to prove almost anything wrong ).

There are some outright fallacies or lies when dealing with demonic spirits. They used to tell them in the old days of Pentecost to cover your mouth when a demon is cast out of somebody. I’ve got news for you! My body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, and not a duplex that allows a demon and the Holy Spirit to occupy me. Plus, you have to have a real inroad for a demon to actually possess you... although Christians can be oppressed and troubled... but not possessed. If you have the Holy Spirit, then He is the “stronger man” that overcomes the demonic strongmen.

Let’s stay scriptural about our approach, and then we know that we have a position of strength since God will back us.

I. First things first

1. Scripturally, there are some elements or basic things that you must have and be operating in before you can really bind demonic attacks and make an effectual stand of God.

It is not the intention of this study to over-complicate your understanding. But there are some things that must be understood in being effective in binding and loosing spirits.

Genesis 1:26 “ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. “

The question of what happened between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 and where the dinosaurs went and how old the earth really is, and why it had been desolated and flooded and dark in verse 2 is another and even more controversial subject.

2. Jesus said this about Satan in Luke 10:18-19, “ 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. “

And Satan or the Serpent was in the garden already when the man and woman were put into the garden. And he was already definitely a fallen being... in fact, later I will show that he was actually a prisoner there, but he was very subtle and seduced the woman into falling. And the woman seduced the man into falling. And through that sin that was handed down through Adam, Satan gained much authority over mankind.

So Adam was given dominion over Satan, and by following Satan in his sin he turned around and gave much of that authority back to Satan. And the sin of Adam has been passed down by our blood.

Romans 5:12-14 “ 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. “

Romans 3:23-25 “ 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth [to be] a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; “

According to Leviticus 17:11, “ For the life of the flesh [is] in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it [is] the blood [that] maketh an atonement for the soul. “, and our blood was tainted with sin. God required our lives because of the sin in our blood.

The blood of Adam has the life force or the life or the soul in it. The Hebrew word for life and soul are the same word nephesh. When Adam sinned, God required the Nephesh or life/soul of man for sin. God told man in the Hebrew, if you eat from the tree dying you shall die. And the devil gained power over man through the sin in his life through the ultimate power of death.

Hebrews 2:14 “ Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; “

3. Jesus Christ was not called Jesus before He was born of the Virgin Mary. He was the Word or LOGOS of God according to John 1:1. He became flesh and was a totally human being except he had no sin. His blood was not tainted by the sin that we are born into; for sin is passed through the father, and Jesus’ father was GOD.

Jesus shed His blood for us. And the life force that flowed from His blood paid the price of death in ours. The blood of Jesus Christ literally destroyed the power of death that Satan had over mankind. Sin gives demons power over us. But the blood of Jesus broke their authority.

So, the devil had through sin much authority over man through man’s sin. When you sin, you give demons authority or the right to hurt you.

If the blood is not present in your life, then demons and the Devil himself does not have to do anything you say or want... in other words you have no power over them because of the sin in your blood. IT IS THE BLOOD OF JESUS THAT BREAKS HIS AUTHORITY.

Our victory over sin and the devil is through the cross; through the cross of Jesus Christ,

Colossians 2:15 “ [And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

In fact the whole point about Jesus’ 1st coming was to set men free from sin and it’s penalty and break the power of the Hell or the Devil off of our lives ! Hallelujah !!!!!

Acts 10:38 “ How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. “

[ELEMENT #1] FIRST ELEMENT IS THE BLOOD OF JESUS TO BREAK SATAN’S AUTHORITY.

Point : Authority is different from power. Authority is the right to take action or give commands, power is what enforces that right or authority. The word power in Hebrews 2:14 means more than just power or force, it means authority or dominion. The blood of Jesus breaks Satan’s dominion over us!

Once You Have That Relationship With Christ, And The Blood of Jesus Is Applied..... That Breaks The Devil’s Actual Rights to Your Soul; But That Doesn’t Stop The Thief From Trying to Steal You.

Some people think because they have the blood applied that that’s all there is to resisting the devil. Sorry, it’s not like that. Let’s look at it. But you must have the blood of Jesus first.

Colossians 2:14-15 “ 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 [And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. “

Romans 14:9 “ For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. “

1 John 3:8 “ He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. “

Galatians 5:1 “ Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. “

[ELEMENT #2] SUBMITTING TO GOD SO JESUS WILL RISE UP IN US. DON’T FIGHT ALONE.

James 4:7 “ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. “

1. We have covered this already, but it is an important element that you must have to bind demonic strongmen. It is God in us that does the work.

You cannot resist the devil alone, when we submit ourselves to Jesus He rises up in us. When we say in the name of Jesus and we’ve spent time with the Lord, He is there too !

2. Too many have succumbed to secret sin and the devil has a lever controlling their lives, and then they try to make him flee and it doesn’t work. There’s a song that says, you better go down in the name of Jesus when you go down.

[ELEMENT #3] SUBJECTING YOURSELF UNDER JESUS’ LORDSHIP LEADS TO THE NEXT ELEMENT: TAKING THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD OR SPIRITUALLY CLOTHING YOURSELF IN JESUS CHRIST. USE THE ARMOUR THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US.

1. You can’t hold hands with the devil and fight him, too. You have to clothe yourself with Jesus.

Ephesians 6:13 “ Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. “

[1] Belt of truth.... walk in the truth of Jesus and His word and His integrity.... protection against lies.

[2] Breastplate of righteousness..... protects your heart from sin. Jesus is our righteousness.

[3] Walking in the preparation or readiness of the gospel of peace.... walk in the word... & spread it!

[4] Shield of faith..... Hebrews 12:2 - Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. Faith protects from

all of the attacks of the wicked one.

[5] Helmet of Salvation..... Jesus is the author of eternal salvation.... his peace will keep or guard our

minds and hearts through Christ Jesus our Lord.

[6] Take the sword of the Spirit.... the [rhema] spoken word of God... demons fear this one!

[7] Praying with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.... this is fundamental to taking the Lord

Jesus Christ as your armour.

After you have broken Satan’s authority by the blood of Jesus.... there is power in the blood to break the devil’s authority, and you have submitted yourself to God so Jesus will rise up in you, and you have armed yourself with the armour of God [the Lord Jesus Christ], then you are ready to...

TAKE SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY OVER THE DEVIL THROUGH GOD and HIS WORD !

Matthew 16:18 “ And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. “

2. Here is a promise that should give us some thought when we feel that we’re going under and defeated. If we are part of that glorious church, then we have the promise that the gates of Hell will not prevail against us.

God’s church isn’t a defeated church! It is an overcoming church. God has called us to take back what the enemy has stolen and take back the land. It’s war!

[A] JESUS SAID, 'I ALSO SAY UNTO THEE..."

•Thou art Peter = Greek petros = a stone or a little stone

•Upon this rock = Greek petra = a large rock like a cliff

•Not time here to argue with Catholic theologians, but the rock that the church is built on is the stone which the builders rejected: the Lord Jesus Christ. The head of the church, not Peter. Ephesians 2:19 “ Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner [stone]; “

•I will build my church: build = Greek oikodemeo = to build and establish. Note that the church does not belong to any man. It belongs to Jesus. When you came into the kingdom of God and was born again, Jesus paid the price to buy you out of slavery and now he owns you:

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “ 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. “

1. We belong to Jesus! Praise God that the devil can't claim me anymore.

2. Church: Greek ekklesia = the assembly; the assembly of the 'called out' ones; the assembly of the faithful christians. No denominations here, just the ones who belong to Jesus.

3. The gates of hell: the gates of the stronghold or fortification of the forces of hell. Like the walls of Jericho, gates that are meant to keep us from claiming what God has promised.

Many times people use this in the context of when the devil attacks us, we will be safe from the gates of hell: THIS IS BACKWARDS! WE ARE NOT FIGHTING A DEFENSIVE WAR. WE ARE FIGHTING AN OFFENSIVE WAR.

GATES ARE STATIONARY: IT ISN'T THE GATES COMING AGAINST US, IT IS US COMING AGAINST THE GATES.

We, through this authority that Jesus has given us, and his word are stronger than the gates of hell. Like Jericho, they must fall flat.

Whatsoever: Greek ean = whosoever or whatsoever, the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.

Bind: Greek deo = to forbid, stop, prohibit = to tie it up.

4. We are given the authority or the right to bind on earth, and God backs it up in Heaven for His church. The gates of Hell cannot withstand our attack, and we will bind demonic spirits and their powers in the name of Jesus Christ and the authority He gave us here.

We are given a right to use the name of Jesus to bind demons and loose people from the powers of Hell by the authority that Jesus gave us, His church here in Matthew. This is taking the kingdom.

Matthew 11:12 “ And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. “

[ELEMENT #4] USE THE AUTHORITY JESUS GAVE HIS CHURCH TO BIND AND LOOSE IN THE SPIRITUAL REALM. USE THE AUTHORITY TO BIND THE STRONGMAN.

1. Keys are authority. The gates of Hell shall not prevail against the church.... Jesus has given us the keys of authority that allows us to bind and loose. The church of the Lord Jesus Christ has been given the authority to literally bind and loose spiritual forces.

The church is called to stand in this authority, and that is why that the church will not be overtaken for we stand in the authority of Jesus Christ.... we are the body of Christ.

There are some that would argue... there is always someone who will about almost everything.... that this binding had to do with excommunication. This is not the context of the scripture. The Greek word for bind means to tie up. It is the same word by the way used for the woman who was bound with an infirmity that Jesus loosed.

Luke 13:11-13 “ 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up [herself]. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called [her to him], and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 13 And he laid [his] hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. “

2. When the spiritual strongmen are encountered, Jesus has given us the authority to bind them. This discourse followed an example of Jesus casting out a demon out of a blind and dumb man:

Matthew 12:22-27 “ 22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? 24 But when the Pharisees heard [it], they said, This [fellow] doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. {Beelzebub: Gr. Beelzebul} 25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: 26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? 27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast [them] out? therefore they shall be your judges. “

Matthew 12:28-29 “ 28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. 29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. “

The Holy Spirit is the activator of the authority of Christ. In other words, He is the stronger man that brings the power of God to bear on the situation and overcomes the wicked strongmen.

3. Remember that there is a difference in authority and power or force. Satan’s authority over us through death was broken by the blood of Jesus Christ. But here, the church is given authority literally over the devil and his forces.

Luke 10:19 “ Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. “

Jesus has literally given us the authority by the Word of God to use His name to apply the power of God. We have the authority to do it as Christians (washed in the blood of Jesus Christ spiritually) part of Jesus’ church to invoke the “power of God” to bind strongmen. And when we do, the Holy Spirit Himself will activate that power and literally becomes “the stronger man”!

We have been given a spiritual power over all of the power of the enemy. Once again, this follows that we have the other elements of binding the demonic powers... such as the blood of Jesus and us submitting ourselves unto God, etc.

Mark 16:17 “ And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; “

4. Not just the preachers, but the believers.... the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. We have the authority in the name of Jesus over the powers of the enemy!

In Matthew 12:29, no other way to enter into a strong man's house and seize his goods or precious vessels but to bind him first.

**NOTE**THAT THE GREEK WORD FOR BIND HERE IS THE EXACT SAME WORD USED IN MATTHEW 16. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BINDING AND LOOSING.

House = his fortress, his stronghold. The stronghold that the demonic strong man has built and guards. This might be a strong hold of a person(that person's mind and heart), or a household, or over a city. Like Jericho, when the devil steals something, he will build walls and protect it(he squats on the land) like he has some kind of right to do so.

Take a spoil, in war there are spoils to take. When we come against the gates of hell and tear down strongholds in people's lives, we take the spoil of that person for Jesus Christ. The land we are fighting for is the land of the human soul.

5. WE FIRST BIND THE STRONG MAN AND THEN WE CAN SPOIL THE STRONGHOLD OR HOUSE TO TAKE A SPOIL:

And finally, this also covers the FINAL ELEMENT that will bring deliverance from a demonic attack.

The authority of binding and loosing is backed up by God by the power of the Holy Spirit.

1. When we have the first four elements... the blood of Jesus; submission to God in prayer and will; having taken the whole armour of God and clothed in Jesus; and using the authority of Jesus He gave unto us.... then the fifth element will come, the Holy Spirit backing up that authority.

Jesus made it clear that he cast out demons through the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the agent that literally binds demons and looses people. Here’s how it happens:

A strongman = Greek ischuros, a well armed warrior or soldier.... a strong man of war.

How do you enter into that area that the demonic warrior has made a stronghold and spoil his goods.... take back what he’s stolen? You have to bind the strongman ! How did Jesus say He bound the strongman?

Through the Spirit of God! You have to take authority over that strongman and the Holy Spirit will through His POWER bind that demonic strongman.

Luke 11:21-22 “ 21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. “

GREEK TRANSLATION OF LUKE 11:21 "WHEN THE STRONG MAN HAVING BEEN WELL ARMED{,} GUARDS THE OF HIMSELF PALACE, IN PEACE IS [ARE] THE GOODS OF HIM.

The enemy will place his forces in a place or person because basically, he is a thief (John 10:10). He will like a squatter sit on land that really isn’t his and put his guards in place to keep it. There are so many lives that are bound up because there is a demonic strongman in charge of them.

The strong man, or demonic man of war guards his house. His house might be somebody's body.

People do still get demon possessed today. Or it might be control over a household. But whichever, that demon will fight to keep it's home. So that it can keep it's stolen goods captive or in peace. The devil doesn't just roll over when you realize he is there, you must take the authority that Christ has given you over him.

GREEK LITERAL TRANSLATION OF LUKE 11:22 "BUT WHEN A STRONGER [THAN] HIM COMING UPON OVERCOMES HIM, THE ARMOUR OF HIM HE TAKES, ON WHICH HE HAD RELIED, AND THE ARMS OF HIM DISTRIBUTES."

3. The stronger than he in Greek is ischuteros, or the stronger man of war. The Holy Ghost is the ultimate strong man of war.... He is the stronger one, stronger than any demonic strongmen. His power is truly absolute and when He enters the arena, His enemies will fall and be bound.

Matthew 16:18 “ And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Many in the church has misunderstood and tried to make it political power or something along those lines, but the weapons of our warfare are not carnal or fleshly. They’re mighty through God !

Sometimes, we have areas where the enemy really torments and tears us down. He steals our zeal toward God and the church; he robs us of our joy. It’s time to say, ENOUGH! If you will place those elements in place, you can bind the strong men trying to rob you.

1. Here, demons bound her and Jesus loosed her. We have the spiritual, scriptural authority to loose people from bondages in prayer. Now having said this... many diseases are natural and without any spiritual power behind it. But in this case, she had a “spirit of infirmity”.

In these scriptures, the spirit of infirmity had bound this woman. Not all sickness is caused of demons. But there are times when demons are responsible for sickness. If this is not true then Jesus did not know what he was talking about and doing.

This child of Abraham had been tormented by a “spirit of infirmity” for 18 years. This is more than “just” a curvature of the spine. She was literally held over and Jesus didn’t just heal her, “He loosed her”!

We need to be careful that in this age of disbelief and ungodliness that the carnality of this world makes us doubt the validity of God's word. The new and old testament teach that some sickness need God's healing, while others are spiritual in nature and that person needs deliverance.

Jesus would heal some, and others as this woman he would loose them from the demonic oppression that destroyed their lives.

Jesus loosed the authority of this demon, and more broadly the devil in this woman's life. Jesus' authority is the final authority.

1. You are given the authority by Jesus in the Word of God to bind the forces of Hell, and the power of the Holy Spirit backs up that authority.

It is the person and power of the Holy Spirit that does the actual binding. But it is the authority of the Word of God we use when we bind that the Holy Spirit is honoring.

Don’t pray, “God stop this demon from tormenting my mind”. Instead use that authority.... “STOP, I bind you in the name of Jesus Christ and command you to go from here”. You have the authority to do this and the power of the Holy Spirit does the actual work in binding the strongman.

3. But before that will work we must have put on our armour and be armed with the weapons that Jesus has given us. We cannot fight the enemy without weapons... think about it; we must use the weapons that He has given unto us.

How can you use the authority of the Word of God if you don’t take the sword of the Spirit which is the spoken word of God and use it with faith, your shield?

4. Plus you must have submitted yourself unto God in your prayer life or none of this will work. Submit ourselves to God, seek His face so Jesus will rise in us in our fight of faith. And it is a fight of faith. 1 Timothy 6:12 “ Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. “

• [ELEMENT #1] FIRST ELEMENT IS THE BLOOD OF JESUS TO BREAK SATAN’S AUTHORITY.

• [ELEMENT #2] SUBMITTING TO GOD SO JESUS WILL RISE UP IN US. DON’T FIGHT ALONE.

• [ELEMENT #3] TAKING THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD OR SPIRITUALLY CLOTHING YOURSELF IN JESUS CHRIST. USE THE ARMOUR THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US.

• [ELEMENT #4] USE THE AUTHORITY JESUS GAVE HIS CHURCH TO BIND AND LOOSE IN THE SPIRITUAL REALM. USE THE AUTHORITY TO BIND THE STRONGMAN.
