MAIN TEXT:  1 Thessalonians 5:19 (KJV) “ Quench not the Spirit. “

Commandment:  Do not put out the fire of the Holy Ghost in your life!  To quench is to douse a fire, and the Holy Spirit is likened many times as the fire of, and is the power source in us that empowers us to walk in the will of God and do the works of God.

  1. Don’t throw cold water on someone else who is operating under the power and fire of God!
  2. Do not throw water on yourself from doing the same thing by resisting the move of the Spirit and smothering it out.

That fire is power, and that power is to bring the manifestation of God through our lives… both in fruit and in spiritual gifts Don’t throw cold  water on that power source of God in your own life or in the lives of others.

The second half of 1 Thessalonians 5 is in context with the rest of the book as the way that we are to live and walk as believers to be “hot” or “fervent” in the Spirit and the power of God, so that we shall be lights in this dark world and be ready when Jesus calls the church out of it!

Up to this point, we have been told how to treat others and God in the commandments:

  • 12-13 tells us to recognize those who work in the ministry and esteem them and the work.
  • 14 tells us how to deal with those who are high maintenance, low impact believers who are troubled – to warn the lazy and disorderly; to comfort the discouraged ones who feel like giving up; and to help hold up those who are weak or sick.
  • 15 tells us that we must treat those who mistreat us well and overcome evil with good.
  • 16-18 talks about our relationship with God.
  • 16 tells us to rejoice evermore and live in the joy of the Lord that comes from the Spirit.
  • 17 tells us to have a prayer in our hearts at all times and to be people of prayer.
  • 18 tells us to be thankful in every thing, and that this is the will of God.

When we fail to walk this way, then we are disobedient to God and that does QUENCH THE SPIRIT

We quench the Spirit when we know to do good and we know to follow the Spirit, but we follow the lusts or desires of our flesh instead This is an act of pride God resists the proud.  When we follow the Spirit and obey the Word of God and flow with God, then we are humbling ourselves to Him or making our will into His.  He gives that person more grace.

Romans 8:14 (KJV) “ For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. “

James 4:6 (KJV) “ But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. “

James 4:17 (KJV) “ Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. “

To walk as a true child of God takes following the Spirit in life.  That will make the fire of the Spirit burn brighter in us, and as the pillar of fire by night to the wandering Children of Israel, we will be led to our own promises from God.  You cannot help but be blessed if you walk in the Spirit.

We walk in the Spirit so that we do not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.  THE ONLY WAY TO NOT FALL INTO THE SINS OF THE FLESH IS TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT.  When we go our own way and the Spirit is quenched, sin is not far behind.  Galatians 5:16 (KJV) “ This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. “

Quenching the Spirit is one of the four major sins that you can commit against the Holy Spirit.

  1. Lying to the Holy Spirit
  2. Quenching the Spirit
  3. Grieving the Spirit
  4. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit

Quenching the Holy Spirit comes from disobeying the Spirit and doing things your own way, or out of fear literally rejecting the move of the Spirit

When we try to put out the influence of the Holy Spirit in our lives and we go our own way, then we are smothering out the fire of God in us and making ourselves lukewarm The Spirit is what makes us fervent in our faith.  And when we rebel against the Spirit and walk in the flesh instead of the Holy Spirit, then we smother out His fire in our lives.

QUENCHING the Spirit leads to GRIEVING  the Spirit if there is not repentance for the quenching.

See, the Holy Spirit is a person (not an “it”), and only a person can be “grieved” as in Ephesians 4:30 (KJV) “ And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. “

To quench the Spirit can include resisting the Holy Spirit when He wants to move through you in spiritual gifts such as prophecy, etc.  He can be quenched when you knowingly rebel against God’s Word ignoring the conviction of the Spirit and doing what your flesh wants to do anyway.  You can quench it in others when you oppose what the Spirit is doing (such as moving in spiritual gifts) through others.  It is rebelling against the Holy Spirit and throwing water on Him.

TOO MANY TIMES, CHURCHES GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT There are far too many churches who are terrified of a real spiritual manifestation of God through spiritual gifts, and they quench the Spirit in their fearThis will cause a church or Christian to dry up.

There are others who walk more in man’s traditions than the Word of God so legalistic that they depend more on their own fleshly works than the work of the Spirit within them.  This will put out the fire of God in a church just as easily.  It is wrong.

Ultimately, when a person or church gets into a pattern of resisting the Holy Spirit, they wind up being a real hindrance for the work of God.  And they will resist and backbite those others who are flowing in the Spirit and being used of God because they are not doing it man’s way.  Acts 7:51-52 (KJV) “ 51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.   52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: “

The devastating consequences that come with that is that we quench the operation of the Holy Spirit in our own lives.  That means that the Spirit slows down or stops producing the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT within us, and that is what gives us the abundant life in Christ.

See, we need that fruit of the Spirit to enjoy the abundant life that Jesus promised that he would bring to us.  John 10:10 (KJV) “ The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. “

Galatians 5:17, 22-25 (KJV) “ 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,   23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.   24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.   25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. “

See, the first thing that happens when we quench the Spirit is that we put out these things in our lives.  Therefore we will not have love or peace or joy and patience or gentleness or faith, etc. being produced in us and we become miserable.

  1. Quench the Spirit by doing it your own way ~ following flesh (temptation might be demonic)
  2. Fruit of the Spirit is slowed radically since the Spirit is being smothered (QUENCHED) in your life
  3. The Fruit keeps you walking in the Spirit, and that keeps you from sin
  4. Real sin begins and you grieve the Holy Spirit
  5. The fruit disappears completely and misery sets in as chastening increases
  6. You move from lukewarm to a lifestyle of bondage

This is the first step in chastening, which God the perfect Father will do when we begin to stray.  And quenching the Spirit is the first step in straying  Hebrews 12:6-8 (KJV) “ 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.   7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?   8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. “

IMPORTANT:  We must repent (as the Church at Ephesus was called to do when they lost their first love of Jesus), and stir up the gift that is within us as Paul exhorted Timothy when this occurs.   Revelation 2:5 (KJV) “ Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. “

2 Timothy 1:6 (AMP) “ 6  That is why I would remind you to stir up (rekindle the embers of, fan the flame of, and keep burning) the [gracious] gift of God, [the inner fire] that is in you by means of the laying on of my hands [with those of the elders at your ordination]. “

1 Thessalonians 5:20-22 (KJV) “ 20 Despise not prophesyings.   21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. “

This is actually connected to the bridge verse about not quenching the Spirit.  This is important in these last days that are prophesied by God’s Word to be a time where your sons and daughters would prophesy, and prophecy is so feared and hated in too many churches.

Acts 2:16-21 lets us know that the hallmark of the last days is your sons and daughters prophesying.  1 Corinthians 14 tells us that we can prophesy and edify one another, but let another stand aside and judge.  The balance is to not despise prophecy, but to judge and prove it.  WE MUST BALANCE IT ON THE SCALES OF THE WORD OF GOD, for it is a surer word of prophecy.

Today, there are two extremes in the church where one group talks about (1) new revelations and leads people away from the true Word of God with false prophecy.

And the other extreme is the groups that (2) fear spiritual gifts and claim (though there is no biblical backing for it when taken in context) that spiritual gifts no longer operate so that there is no prophecy given today.

This is the age of spiritual gifts moving through the called out ones… the church.  Young or old or male or female does not matter, for God will operate spiritual gifts (especially prophetic ones) in the last days.  We are in the last days.  It began at the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2, and will continue until the rapture (catching away of the church).  THIS IS A HALLMARK OF THE LAST DAYS ACCORDING TO JOEL AND ACTS.

It is from the Holy Spirit, and denying or despising it is quenching the Spirit.

We are to abstain also from every form of evil.  This is to keep you out of trouble.  The word in KJV for appearance can mean just as easily “kind” as in different kinds or forms.  In other words, Stay away and don’t have part of any and every kind of evil. Ephesians 4:27 (KJV) “ Neither give place to the devil. “

Romans 12:9 (KJV) “ Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. “

Every form of evil is by its very nature the enemy of GodEvil is the rebellion and rejection of God, and we are to abstain or have nothing to do with every “form” or kind of evil

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 (KJV) “ 23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.  “

He wishes them the blessing of sanctification from the God of peace.  Now, this is a pivotal verse for understanding how that we can obey all the commandments given so far.  If we want to please God and be ready and walk in the light of Jesus Christ and be ready, then we must not walk according to the world and our own way, and quench the Holy Spirit.

We are given supernatural power by God in this by the sanctification of the whole person by the God of peace.  He keeps us from His wrath by setting us aside for Him and bringing the works of God in our lives that we are kept in His peace.

The word sanctify is used here.  It shows that God is doing a work in us to be able to walk in the Spirit.

SANCTIFY = Greek hagiazo, which means to make something “holy”, and set it aside for service and use by God.  It is the making something holy that is now dedicated to God so that God can fill it and use it.  It is setting it apart.

The RECOVERY VERSION BIBLE has a wonderful illustration given by Witness Lee.  I will offer an amended version of it here from memory.  Sanctification like “Tea-ification”:   The trials of life and prayer moves the Word and the Spirit within us, and the Holy Spirit blends Jesus Christ in us more and more within us and changing us from glory to glory more into the image of Jesus Christ.   Just as stirring the tea in tea-ification makes the water into tea, so does SANCTIFICATION blend Jesus into us so that we become the image of God.  2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV) “ 18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. “

God wants to transform you more and more into the image of Jesus Christ through the blood of Jesus, and the Word of God, and the things that He allows to come up in our lives.  The Holy Spirit is stirring Jesus into more and more into our lives saturating us with the holiness and personality of Jesus Christ!  We are a work in progress!

We never need to grieve the Holy Spirit and hinder the work of God in our lives.  We can walk according to these commandments and treat other well even when they do not treat us well, and become true worshipers of God and walk in thanksgiving and the power of the Spirit if we submit ourselves to God and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus in us.  That is sanctification, and it is God pouring His holiness in us!

We will live the abundant life of Christ and know the fullness of the Kingdom of Heaven in us when we live that way, and Jesus will be the Lord of our lives!  It’s a good life, and in fact, it is the only real life that is abundant with the good things of God.
